Weekend family getaways can be great for the family to take a break together and do some out-of-the-ordinary things as a family.  These weekend family breaks can also be simple and relaxing times.  However you plan your short family retreat, a family weekend getaway gives you the chance to enjoy unique endeavors, go to family friendly destinations, and experience fun things to do that are sure to create some delightful times and memories for you and your kids.

Weekend getaways for families are those short family breaks that make all the difference in the world!  So have some fun and stretch out a little!

Here’s a list of family-friendly things to do that work well as weekend getaways for the entire family and are especially fun weekend getaways for kids.

Weekend Getaway Ideas For When You Want Your Family to Have Fun!

Idea # 1:  Consider going to an indoor water park for the weekend.

What’s nice about this kind of weekend getaway is that indoor water parks are usually built in association with and inside of some of the best all inclusive family resorts.

Look for a Great Wolf Lodge in your area or find a resort like the Wilderness in the Smokies in Sevierville TN, just outside Gatlinburg and just a short jump to Pigeon Forge and The Smoky Mountains, and you’ll be living in luxury while everyone in the family has a blast.

There are many family resorts with an indoor water park theme, and finding one close enough for a weekend getaway should be easy to do.  The only thing left to do after you find one is to relax and have fun on your break.

Idea # 2:  If you’re kids are older, enjoy a murder mystery weekend together, or schedule a murder mystery party in your home if your children are too young to participate in an on-site murder mystery event.

Who will be missing by the end of your time there, and who did the ultimate dastardly deed?

Murder mystery breaks are not only going to take your family out of the routine, they will help build a bond and provide team building results as you work together to discover who perpetrated the dastardly deed you work together to solve.

You can find murder mystery theaters with a murder mystery dinner included, stay for a weekend in lovely accommodations with ghostly features and frightening activities, or sleep overnight in a nice bed and breakfast with a killer theme (no pun intended).  LOL

There are even murder mystery trains where a family can participate in solving a murder aboard a speeding locomotive.

As noted, these kind of breaks should be limited to older children, families with teenage and college aged kids, with those younger children under 12 or so perhaps opting for a murder mystery party at home.

Idea # 3:  Don’t just go camping.  Go camping in style!

There is a new trend in family camping these days, and it’s called glamping.  Coming from the original idea of luxury camping or “glamorous camping”, glamping puts you right in the middle of natural and outdoor activities but also provides you with the most comfortable and sometimes even luxurious of sleeping quarters.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer but who really don’t want to pitch a tent or sleep on rocks, this is the way to go.

You can rent a tent, bungalow, tree house, yurt, or even cabin on a ranch, in a desert, by the water, ON the water, or just about anywhere else for that matter, and have the same accommodations as a five star hotel inside while white water rafting, fishing, moose spotting, or sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows on the outside.

It’s the best of both worlds!

Even some KOA Campgrounds are getting into the new swing of things with luxury outfitted cabins and cottages, nicely furnished tree houses, 1960s-style Airstream trailers, and furnished teepees with futons.

Perhaps even more unique in luxury camping options is KOA’s beautifully restored real red cabooses that were once used by some of America’s historic railway lines.  While they worked dutifully during the earlier times of American history, these little red cabooses have taken on a new form of family travel accommodations for family breaks today.

To those KOA Kampgrounds of America and your little red cabooses, all I can say is “I knew you could.  I knew you could.  I knew you could”!

Idea # 4:  Vacation rentals are a great way to spend comfortable family time someplace away from “home” while also providing a home base for enjoying nearby events or recreational activities over a weekend.

Beach houses, condos, villas, cabins, and vacation homes are all options for families.

Some state parks provide cabin rentals, putting you and your kids right there among hiking trails, lake beaches, and paddle boats.  These inexpensive rentals and activities are great for cheap family breaks.

Vacation rentals by owner are available just about everywhere you can think of, whether you want to enjoy the majestic views of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, go to NYC street fairs in New York, or enjoy family beach vacations at the ocean.  All sorts of vacation rentals are available for wherever you would like to spend your weekend or whatever fun event, festival, or activity you would like to be a part of.

Idea # 5:  A nice, local family hotel or family resort in a nearby city can make quick and cheap weekend family breaks budget friendly while still keeping them fun and memorable.

When you’re booking hotel reservations for you and the kids, make sure the hotel has the amenities that might make your getaway more enjoyable (like an indoor swimming pool if it’s cold outside, a free continental breakfast, or free wifi, wireless internet, really important to teenagers).

At a place like Homewood Suites Hotel by Hilton, you can enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast, a beautiful outdoor pool, and in-room movies with your family in a spacious one or two bedroom suite..  In fact, Homewood Suite Hotels, and many other hotels with suites, have kitchens too if you want to bring your meals and snacks.

When planning hotel weekend breaks, make sure you check what is available at the hotel as well as in the community to make the most of your break time together.

Weekend family breaks are easy to plan for and even easier to do.  What’s more important, they’re easy to enjoy with your family!
